Ayurveda Biology Added as Subject in UGC National Eligibility Test Starting December 2024

The University Grants Commission (UGC) has announced a significant move to promote traditional knowledge alongside modern education, adding "Ayurveda Biology" as a new subject in the National Eligibility Test (NET) starting December 2024. This decision was made following recommendations from an expert committee and aims to integrate Ayurvedic science into modern higher education.

As of the 581st meeting on June 25, 2024, the UGC NET is expected to include "Ayurveda Biology" in its curriculum, enhancing research opportunities in this field. The National Testing Agency (NTA) conducts the UGC NET to determine eligibility for lectureships and awarding Junior Research Fellowships (JRF) in Indian universities.

Dr. Rini Vohra Shrivastava, Scientific Advisor at Maharishi Ayurveda, welcomed the move, describing it as a "positive step" towards integrating Ayurveda into modern education systems. She stated that while this is a significant milestone, introducing Ayurveda Biology is only the beginning and that Ayurvedic science deserves a place in India's education system.

The introduction of Ayurveda Biology reflects the UGC's commitment to incorporating traditional Indian knowledge systems into higher education. This move is expected to attract more students to Ayurveda and related fields, promoting research and innovation. Dr. Shrivastava also noted that there is growing global interest in Ayurvedic principles as Western sciences increasingly acknowledge their relevance.

Ayurveda Biology offers a holistic understanding of the body, mind, and soul, emphasizing their interconnectedness with Nature. According to Dr. Shrivastava, incorporating herbs or plants into one's diet is just one aspect of Ayurvedic practice; it provides a comprehensive system that looks at the individual as an entirety.

This move highlights not only the growing recognition of Ayurveda in academic circles but also India's efforts to preserve and promote its rich cultural heritage in modern scientific discourse. The UGC’s decision demonstrates a commitment to integrating traditional knowledge systems with modern education, which is expected to benefit younger generations.

Interested candidates can apply for the UGC NET through the official NTA website but need to stay updated on the application window announcement for the December 2024 cycle.
