Australia Just a Win Away from World Test Championship Final Qualification
MELBOURNE (December 31, 2024): The Australian men's cricket team, led by Pat Cummins, is on the cusp of securing its spot in the World Test Championship (WTC) final, set to take place at Lord's from June 11 to 15 next year.
Currently ranked second in the WTC 2023-25 points table with a Percentage Completion Time (PCT%) of 61.46, Australia needs just one win from its remaining three matches to guarantee a place in the final against South Africa.
Australia's next match is a five-day Test series against India at Sydney from January 3-7, 2025. Even if the match ends in a draw, Australia will still have time to secure a spot in the final by avoiding a whitewash in Sri Lanka. If they succeed, their team will finish with a minimum of 55.26 PCT%, while India and Sri Lanka will have limited room for movement.
However, if Australia fails to win any of its remaining matches, India will overtake them in the points table and secure a third consecutive spot in the WTC final.
South Africa has already secured a spot in the final after beating Pakistan by two wickets on December 29 in their Boxing Day Test match. The Proteas have all but sealed their place in the final if they win their second Test against Pakistan at Newlands from January 3-7, 2025.
A win for Australia in its series against India followed by a series draw and no whitewash against Sri Lanka will ensure a spot atop the WTC table for Australia.
