In the aftermath of Arsenal's disappointing exit from the Champions League at the hands of Inter Milan, the focus shifts to the Premier League where the Gunners are set to face Chelsea at the Emirates Stadium on Sunday. The match, pivotal for Arsenal's title aspirations, will be broadcast live on Sky Sports.
Paul Merson, in his latest column for Sky Sports, emphasized the critical nature of the upcoming game, suggesting that Martin Odegaard must start against Chelsea. "Arsenal will know how Liverpool and Manchester City get on [on Saturday]. If they both win, I think Martin Odegaard must start [on Sunday]. Ten and nine points is a lot of ground to make up if they both win," Merson stated. He highlighted the need for Arsenal to have a player with the vision and creativity to unlock defenses, qualities he believes Odegaard possesses.
Reflecting on the recent Champions League defeat, Merson commented on Arsenal's performance, noting, "They were good against Inter Milan, who are a decent team, but the only thing missing was that guile." He also criticized the refereeing decisions in the match, particularly a non-awarded penalty for Arsenal which he described as "stonewall."
The match against Chelsea comes at a time when Arsenal's squad faces scrutiny, especially with the potential departure of Edu, the club's sporting director. Merson drew parallels with the exit of David Dein, suggesting it could impact Arsenal's recruitment strategy. "It will be a big miss and reminds me of David Dein leaving Arsenal. The quality of player they brought in was phenomenal while he was at the club," he reflected.
Elsewhere, Merson touched on Manchester United's possible managerial change, expressing skepticism about Ruben Amorim's fit due to his tactical preferences. "My problem is, he plays three at the back. He would have ticked the boxes at Chelsea, but Enzo Maresca has done fantastic," he explained, questioning how Amorim's style would integrate with United's current squad.
As the Premier League heats up, teams like Manchester City and Liverpool continue to pose significant challenges. Merson noted City's current struggles without Rodri but predicted a turnaround under Pep Guardiola. "They will find a way of doing it, but, at the moment, teams have to make hay while the sun shines!" he remarked.
For Arsenal, the game against Chelsea is not just about three points but about sending a statement of intent in their quest for the Premier League title. With the pressure mounting, Arsenal's performance on Sunday could very well define their season.
