ARGENTINA FALL SHORT IN WORLD CUP QUALIFIERS WITH SURPRISE DEFEAT TO PARAGUAY

BUENOS AIRES, ARGENTINA - Lionel Messi's Argentina side suffered their third consecutive loss in the World Cup qualifiers after a 2-1 defeat to Paraguay at Estadio Defensores del Chaco.

Lautaro Martinez gave Argentina the early lead, but Antonio Sanabria equalised for Paraguay before Alderete netted the winner in the second half. The loss marked a worrying trend for Messi's team, who are now facing increasing pressure with the World Cup just out of reach.

Despite being underwhelming himself in the match, Messi was at the center of controversy when he faced repeated tough tackles from Paraguayan defender Alderete. After his complaints to the referee were ignored, Messi allegedly called him a "coward". The incident sparked widespread outrage, but the Argentine legend later calmed things when he issued a statement later.

However, Messi's issues didn't end there as he became the target of hostile fans after attempting to take a corner. Bottles came raining down on him, sparking huge protests from social media users and football fans worldwide. Some even went so far as to call him a "shitdy dwarf".

Paraguayan defender Alderete later issued an apology for the fans’ ill behaviour in an Instagram post, addressing Messi directly and expressing regret on behalf of his country.

"Dear Leo Messi, I want to apologize on behalf of my country for the unfortunate incident in which someone threw a bottle at you. You are an idol for millions here and around the world (especially for Fede). We deeply regret this disrespectful act that does not represent the affection and admiration we feel for you," Alderete wrote.

The apology has been warmly received by fans, who appreciate Alderete's efforts to restore goodwill. As Argentina head into their upcoming match against Peru on November 19, the pressure will only intensify, with some calling it a chance to reboot and revive their World Cup hopes.
