Amaravati, Andhra Pradesh - In a significant development, the Andhra Pradesh Legislative Assembly has unanimously passed a resolution urging the Centre to set up a High Court bench at Kurnool, in line with long-standing demands from the region.
Minister for Law N.Md. Farooq tabled the resolution in the House, which was warmly accepted by Members of the Legislative Assembly (MLAs) from Kurnool district and other parts of Rayalaseema. The resolution aims to bring a High Court bench to the region, addressing the long-pending demands of its people.
Chief Minister N. Chandrababu Naidu tabled the resolution in the House, stating that his government was committed to developing Kurnool and had been working towards establishing a High Court bench at the regional hub for some time now. Alleging that the previous YSR Congress Party government neglected the Rayalaseema region, CM Naidu sought to rectify this oversight.
The Legislative Assembly's unanimous approval comes on the back of an earlier decision by the state Cabinet to set up a permanent bench of the High Court in Kurnool. In response, the state law secretary wrote a letter to the registrar general of the Andhra Pradesh High Court, outlining the need for a high court presence at Kurnool and referencing similar setups in other states.
Prior to this approval, CM Naidu had assured the Assembly that institutions like the Andhra Pradesh State Human Rights Commission (APSHRC) and Lok Ayukta would continue to operate from Kurnool. This move aims to placate protests by lawyers who had taken out a procession against the proposed relocation of these institutions to Amaravati.
The development is seen as a major step forward in addressing the region's long-standing demands, with the Chief Minister assuring that efforts were underway to establish a High Court bench at Kurnool.
