Angioplasty at Rs 1.28 Lakh, Patients' Relatives Launch Protest Outside Khyati Multi Specialty Hospital in Ahmedabad

Two people have died and five others are being ventilated on life support after undergoing angioplasty at Khyati Multi Specialty Hospital in Ahmedabad, sparking outrage among irate relatives who claim the procedure was performed without their consent.

Senma Nagarbhai (45) and Mahesh Barot (55) were the two deceased, whose relatives claimed they had no family history of heart conditions or major diseases. "They were brought for examination and angioplasty was performed without informing us," a relative revealed in an interview.

The hospital reportedly conducted a free health check-up camp in Borisna village, where 80-90 people were examined, including 19 patients who were taken to the hospital by ambulance for treatment. Out of these 19 patients, 12 underwent angioplasty, resulting in two fatalities.

All six patients, who are beneficiaries of the Ayushman Bharat's Pradhan Mantri Jan Arogya Yojana (PMJAY) scheme, had undergone a series of surgeries estimated to amount to Rs 1.28 lakh under the government programme.

The relatives, sarpanch and other villagers, came to the hospital following news of the two deaths. They were met with silence by hospital authorities despite their repeated attempts to speak with staff or doctors.

Following the angry protest, State Health Minister Rishikesh Patel has ordered an inquiry into the matter, while Ahmedabad Municipal Corporation (AMC) Health Officer Bhavin Solanki visited the hospital on Tuesday. "The complaint of relatives will be accepted by health department and AMC will probe into it," Solanki stated.

"This is clearly a case of procedural lapse," Solanker added, stating that as per norm, no operation can be performed without family consent. The investigation has promised to uncover the root cause behind this incident and ensure accountability.
