Amicable Resolution Reached in Beard Policy Dispute at Karnataka Government College

Hassan, Karnataka – November 11, 2024: A dispute regarding the enforcement of beard grooming policies at a government nursing college in Holenarasipura, Hassan district, has been resolved peacefully, according to Dr. Rajanna, Director of Hassan Institute of Medical Sciences.

The controversy emerged when the Jammu and Kashmir Students Association penned a letter to Karnataka Chief Minister Siddaramaiah, highlighting "significant challenges" faced by Kashmiri students at the college. The association claimed that students were being discriminated against and barred from participating in college activities unless they trimmed their beards to a '01' trimmer length or went clean-shaven.

In response to these allegations, Dr. Rajanna clarified that the college's directive was not about restricting personal freedom but about maintaining hygiene during clinical duties. "These students have mistaken the instruction given about untidy dress and keeping a long beard," he stated. He further explained that the instructions were part of the clinical process to ensure students maintain a neat appearance.

Following discussions with the students, an agreement was reached. Dr. Rajanna mentioned, "The students agreed to comply with the college management's directions, which include wearing neat attire, being punctual, and keeping their beards trimmed." He emphasized that the resolution was amicable, and the students expressed satisfaction with the outcome.

The college, currently hosting about 40 Kashmiri students, has taken steps to ensure a supportive environment. "The faculties and principal have visited their rooms and counseled the students," Dr. Rajanna added, highlighting the efforts to maintain a positive educational atmosphere.

This incident underscores the delicate balance between personal freedoms and institutional policies, particularly in educational settings where cultural sensitivities must be navigated with care.
