Amazon Invests AU$20 Billion to Boost Cloud Computing, Artificial Intelligence Adoption in Australia

Sydney, June 14th, 2025 - Amazon today announced a major investment of AU$20 billion from 2025 to 2029 to expand, operate, and maintain its data center infrastructure in Australia. The significant investment is aimed at supporting the country's growing demand for cloud computing and artificial intelligence (AI) solutions.
The US e-commerce giant's AU$20 billion investment will accelerate AI adoption and capability, while driving innovation at scale and ensuring compliance with local regulations. This move supports the Australian government's vision to boost productivity and economic growth through AI innovation, which is projected to contribute up to AU$600 billion to Australia's GDP by 2030.
Amazon's commitment to Australia began in 2012, with the launch of its AWS Asia Pacific (Sydney) Region. The company has continued to expand its presence in the country, launching new regions and services in recent years, including the AWS Asia Pacific (Melbourne) Region and Amazon Bedrock, a fully managed AI service.
To further solidify its investment, Amazon will be investing in three new solar farms in Victoria and Queensland, which will be delivered and operated by European Energy. The solar farm projects are part of Amazon's efforts to power its Australian operations with renewable energy, reducing its carbon footprint.
Currently, Amazon has invested AU$467 million in renewable energy projects in Australia since 2020, making it the largest corporate purchaser of renewable energy globally. According to a study by Accenture, migrating compute-heavy AI workloads to AWS can reduce carbon emissions by up to 94% compared with on-premises data centers.
The Australian government has also announced a partnership with Amazon to provide a "Top Secret" AWS Cloud to deliver cloud innovation in national security and defense, enhancing the nation's defense and intelligence capabilities.
With this latest investment, Amazon is set to further cement its position as a leader in the cloud computing market in Australia, driving growth and innovation across the country.
