Akshay Kumar Reveals Timing Behind Giving Up Canadian Citizenship Amid Diplomatic Tensions

Mumbai, March 15, 2024 - Bollywood star Akshay Kumar on Thursday opened up about his decision to relinquish his Canadian citizenship earlier this year, attributing it to the blessings of his parents. This comes as tensions between India and Canada are escalating amid strained diplomatic relations.

The actor had been a subject of controversy for years over holding dual citizenship, which sparked fierce debates and criticisms, particularly in light of his association with national causes related to India. After months of deliberation, Akshay finally surrendered his Canadian passport, acquiring an Indian one and bringing closure to the contentious issue.

Speaking at the Hindustan Times Leadership Summit 2024, Akshay was asked which divine intervention facilitated his citizenship change just before India-Canada relations began to deteriorate. He responded laughs, "Not any baba, it's the blessings of my parents! I had applied for it a long time back, during the Covid pandemic era." His candid response hinted that he may not have necessarily chosen the moment due to any pressing external pressures.

It is worth noting that Akshay had initially sought Canadian citizenship in the 1990s when his career was facing a string of flops. Upon changing allegiance 25 years later, the actor had found himself at the center of a heated debate amidst intense media scrutiny and public interest.
