Aizawl Hosts International Chemistry Conference and National Convention

Aizawl, Mizoram - The scenic city of Aizawl recently became the hub for chemical sciences with the hosting of the international conference on 'Current Trends in Chemical Sciences Research and Education' (CACSRE) at Mizoram University. Alongside, the National Convention of Chemistry Teachers (NCCT) also took place, marking a significant convergence of academic minds in the region.

The three-day conference, inaugurated by Mizoram's Education Minister Vanlalthlana, highlighted the critical role of science education in development. The minister's speech underscored the importance of nurturing scientific temper among the youth. Ved Prakash Singh, Head of the Industrial Chemistry Department at Mizoram University and the event's convener, welcomed the attendees.

The conference saw participation from notable figures in the field of chemistry. Guests of honor included SK Mehta, Vice-Chancellor of Ladakh University, and RC Deka, Vice-Chancellor of Cotton University, who provided insights into the evolving landscape of chemistry and science education.

Distinguished speakers from around the globe, including Konstantin Volcho from the Novosibirsk Institute of Organic Chemistry in Russia and T Punniyamurthy from IIT-Guwahati, enriched the sessions with their expertise. The event featured multiple plenary sessions, invited lectures, and presentations, including 12 rapid-fire talks, 30 oral presentations, and over 60 poster presentations, showcasing innovative research and educational strategies.

A unique aspect of this year's conference was the NCCT, which for the first time was held in Mizoram. It attracted students and teachers from local schools for a day dedicated to climate change and sustainable development. Educational activities included quizzes on environmental issues and sessions on advanced topics like nanopesticides and eco-friendly technologies.

The conference concluded with plenary lectures by Ravi P Singh from IIT-Delhi and Subharata Sen from Shiv Nadar University. The valedictory session featured a comprehensive report by Singh and the distribution of certificates. Outstanding presentations were recognized with cash awards sponsored by the Royal Society of Chemistry, London.

This event, supported by major funding bodies like BRNS-DAE, CSIR, DRDO, and the Royal Society of Chemistry (UK), along with the Association of Chemistry Teachers (ACT), Mumbai, attracted over 200 participants from various prestigious institutions across India. It provided a fertile ground for collaboration, fostering innovation and sharing of knowledge in the chemical sciences.

The success of CACSRE and NCCT in Aizawl has set a precedent for future scientific gatherings, highlighting Mizoram's growing prominence in the international academic community.
