Ahmedabad: GBRC Transfers Advanced Biotech Innovations to Private Sector

Ahmedabad, 2023 – The Gujarat Biotechnology Research Centre (GBRC), funded by the state government, has successfully transferred three of its pioneering technologies to private sector companies, marking a significant step towards practical application in health and agriculture sectors.
In a ceremony held recently, two groundbreaking genetic screening technologies developed at GBRC were handed over to Ahmedabad-based firms. The first technology focuses on the early detection of Hereditary Breast and Ovarian Cancer (HBOC) through a unique panel designed specifically for the Western Indian population. This panel, which has been highlighted for its uniqueness, includes cases like that of a 14-year-old girl from Rajasthan who was diagnosed with the BRCA gene mutation but unfortunately succumbed to the disease shortly after.
"The panel not only aids in early detection but also supports critical interventions such as prophylactic surgeries," explained a senior GBRC official, referencing the high-profile case of Angelina Jolie who underwent a similar procedure.
The second technology targets Muscular Dystrophies (MDs), a group of genetic disorders characterized by progressive muscle weakness. GBRC's new array allows for the diagnosis of 29 prevalent types of MDs in India through a single blood test, simplifying what previously required multiple tests. "This advancement will not only aid in early diagnosis but also in family planning and gene therapy interventions," the official added.
Additionally, GBRC has developed a probiotic formulation aimed at treating endometriosis in cattle, a condition that affects dairy production and contributes to the overuse of antibiotics, thus promoting antimicrobial resistance. "The trials for this treatment have been successful, showing promising results in reducing antibiotic use," noted GBRC officials.
These technology transfers are part of a broader initiative by the Gujarat state government to bridge the gap between academic research and commercial application, fostering collaborations that can lead to viable products and processes beneficial to public health and the economy.
The transfer agreements were signed in Ahmedabad, highlighting the state's commitment to innovation in biotechnology and its application for societal benefit.
