ADNOC Gas, Baker Hughes Launch Groundbreaking Climate Technology
In a significant move towards reducing carbon emissions, ADNOC Gas in partnership with Baker Hughes has successfully deployed Levidian's pioneering LOOP technology at the Habshan Gas Processing Plant.
This first-ever deployment of the technology marks a major milestone as it converts methane, the main constituent of natural gas, into graphene, a versatile material with immense industrial potential. TheLOOP unit is capable of producing over 1 tonne per annum (tpa) of graphene and 1 tpa of hydrogen, aligning with global energy transition goals.
"This deployment signifies a significant milestone for ADNOC Gas," said Mohamed Al Hashemi, COO of ADNOC Gas. "By unlocking new value from natural gas, we are driving decarbonization and supporting the UAE's industrial growth and climate ambitions while shaping a more sustainable energy future."
The partnership brings together ADNOC Gas and Baker Hughes to bring innovation from startups and research labs into complex industrial sites, ensuring high technical standards and focus on health, safety, and environment.
Chief Executive Officer of Levidian, John Hartley, expressed enthusiasm for the project, stating, "We're seeing huge appetite within the market for our graphene... We're excited to be working with Baker Hughes and ADNOC to unlock a new source of this super-material."
The graphene produced at the Habshan complex will be evaluated and utilized by ADNOC's Technology team to explore numerous applications across industries. With its potential use in enhancing electric vehicle batteries, solar panels, concrete, tires, and polymer pipes, the product holds immense promise for transforming various sectors.
As data from the pilot is analyzed and shared with Levidian, it will aid in refining AI modeling and digital twin development to optimize energy consumption and graphene output for future installations.
