Aap Tops Brass’s Snub: Why Kailash Gahlot’s Decision To Quit The Aam Aadmi Party Wasn’t A Whim

Kailash Gahlot, the senior-most leader in terms of age and a cabinet minister until Sunday, has finally left the Aam Aadmi Party (AAP) after years of struggling for power. But it was not a sudden decision taken on a whim. Rather, his departure is the culmination of a series of incidents and snubs from top AAP brass that led to his frustration.

The move comes as the AAP leadership continues to centralize powers, with Delhi Chief Minister Arvind Kejriwal and Deputy Chief Minister Atishi enjoying absolute control over decision-making processes within the party. However, Gahlot had been a regular participant in high-profile government events for almost three years after the top leadership went to jail, showcasing his commitment to service.

Despite being an important cabinet minister, Gahlot had not given up his seat on stage at major events during Kejriwal's prolonged absence from office. He was last seen attending all significant ceremonies where the chief minister or top leaders were absent. His unwavering dedication was evident in his interactions with L-G VK Saxena, who had filled in the void left by Kejriwal in several capacities.

However, this loyalty proved futile when Atishi was chosen as a replacement over more senior AAP leaders and an experienced MLA elected just last year got critical portfolios in the cabinet. The move may have sparked anger among party members but also reflected a deeper change within APAR where youth are being prioritized over experience, pushing established figures out of positions of power.

Sources close to Gahlot revealed that he was expecting important assignments but his ambitions had remained unchecked despite holding senior posts. His frustration may have led him to reconsider his position within the organization after he lost significant domains in May after deputy Arvind Kejriwal was arrested.

A turning point came with Kejriwal’s decision to resign followed by Atishi becoming Delhi Chief Minister, pushing the relatively quiet Gahlot further down AAP's ladder, and making way for a younger, ambitious politician. His eventual departure has been attributed to his increasing disappointment over AAP failing to promote him from within.

The Kailash Gahlot saga is a warning sign about the AAP’s priorities in modern politics. How far can leaders expect loyalty without acknowledging hard work and strategic ambitions?
