AAP Legislator Gurpreet Bassi Gogi Dies After Shooting Himself

A Punjab Legislative Assembly (MLA) member from the Aam Aadmi Party (AAP) died on Friday after shooting himself, according to police. The 58-year-old legislator, Gurpreet Bassi Gogi, was found dead at his Ludhiana home with gunshot injuries.

Gogi's death occurred around 12 a.m. after he attended a public function earlier in the night. His wife reported hearing gunshots from another room where her husband lay bleeding. The MLA was rushed to the hospital but unfortunately, he succumbed to his injuries and declared dead.

According to police officials, an autopsy report is yet to be conducted to determine if Gogi's death was a case of suicide or misadventure. The Punjab Police Commissioner, Kuldeep Chahal, and Joint Police Commissioner, Jaskaran Singh Teja, have confirmed the legislator's death.

Gogi was elected as MLA from Ludhiana (West) three years ago and was known as a strong advocate for various causes in the city. He had been involved in several controversies, including his public spat with local residents over a pipeline project delayed by months.

Days ago, Gogi met with Vidhan Sabha Speaker Kultar Singh Sandhwan and AAP MP Sant Baba Balbir Singh Seechewal for a cleanliness drive in Buddha Nullah. The incident has raised questions about the legislator's fragile mental state ahead of his untimely demise.

Gogi is survived by his wife Sukhchain Kaur Gogi, as well as a son and daughter. The party has confirmed his death and expressed sympathy to the bereaved family.

As news of his death spreads, the Punjab unit of Aam Aadmi Party has issued a statement expressing shock at the legislator's decision. "We are deeply saddened by the news of Gurpreet Bassi Gogi's untimely death," the party said in a statement.
