AAP Leader Kailash Gahlot Quits Amid Power Struggle And Pressure From Agencies
New Delhi: Three months after the arrest of Aam Aadmi Party (AAP) leader Arvind Kejriwal and two other top ministers, Kailash Gahlot, a seasoned AAP leader, has quit the party.
Gahlot, 50, announced his decision to leave the party in an emotional speech, stating that he was forced out due to immense pressure from central agencies. He stated that despite being one of the senior-most leaders in terms of age after the arrest of the top leadership, he never received the powers and position he deserved.
Sources close to the party revealed that Gahlot's frustration has been brewing for months due to his diminishing role within theAAP. After Kejriwal was arrested, Gahlot's role as Delhi home minister increased. He assumed eight of Sisodia's portfolios in February 2023, including finance and revenue.
However, even with this elevated status, Gahlot felt his influence began to wane after Atishi, a relatively new face in the party, was appointed chief minister in August 2023. The AAP nominated Atishi for flag-hoisting on Independence Day, bypassing Gahlot's request, further adding to his frustration.
Gahlot met Delhi Lt Governor VK Saxena several times and made sure he attended events where Arvind Kejriwal was present, showcasing the party's solidarity despite its top brass being behind bars. His efforts were not enough, however, as Atishi dominated the power structure in AAP following her appointment as chief minister.
"It is disheartening to see a young face like Atishi enjoying all the powers and portfolios while experienced leaders sit patiently awaiting better opportunities," said an AAP leader, requesting anonymity.
News18 has also learned that Gahlot had been facing pressure from central agencies for years before Kejriwal's arrest. He was under the scanner of the income tax department over alleged tax evasion and questioned in another two corruption cases.
Gahlot decided to leave the party and joined the BJP on Sunday.
