AAP Leader Kailash Gahlot Quits After Feeling Snubbed By Party Top Brass

New Delhi: Aam Aadmi Party (AAP) leader and former cabinet minister Kailash Gahlot has quit the party after feeling snubbed by the top brass, sources told News18 on Sunday.

Gahlot, 50, was expecting a better position and power after the top leadership went to jail and a reshuffle took place in the party. However, he was sidelined despite his efforts to attend all key events where AAP chief Arvind Kejriwal was present.

The AAP's decision to nominate "newcomer" Atishi as the next chief minister instead of Gahlot or any senior minister for Flag-hoisting on August 15 at the state-level Independence Day event, was a major gaffe. However, L-G VK Saxena had later nominated Gahlot for hoisting the national flag, which added to his frustration.

Sources said that several AAP leaders were unhappy with the decision to give the top spot to Atishi, who is only in her maiden term. Not just the chief minister's chair, Atishi was also given the maximum portfolios in the cabinet.

Gahlot's decision to quit comes at a time when the party is facing several challenges. The AAP has been critical of the Centre and Delhi L-G on almost every issue. Gahlot had always maintained a low profile and kept away from name-calling, blame game or allegations unlike many other AAP leaders.

On the other hand, Atishi's rise in stature could be seen as a result of her aggressive approach to issues, which is often at odds with the softer image that Kejriwal wants to project.

It may be noted that Gahlot has been facing pressure from central agencies for quite some time. He was under scanner of the income tax department and also questioned in several cases including liquor scam case.

AAP on Sunday stated that Gahlot was under pressure from central agencies and left the party to join BJP. However, no official word came out from Gahlot regarding his next move.

Gahlot's resignation marks a blow to AAP, which is already facing internal conflict with its top leaders Atishi, Kejriwal among others.
