Aam Aadmi Party’s Shifting Stakes: Kailash Gahlot's Sudden Departure from AAP

In a surprise move, Kailash Gahlot, the 50-year-old Delhi MLA and cabinet minister who had been an integral part of Aam Aadmi Party (AAP) leadership until Sunday, has quit the party. The sudden departure comes after several incidents in the last few months, particularly after the arrest of AAP's top leadership.
Gahlot’s decision to leave the party was allegedly forced upon him due to pressure from central agencies and the constant snubs he received from AAP top brass despite his efforts to maintain a low profile and perform well. The news comes at a time when Gahlot was expected to have more power and authority after the top leadership went to jail and a reshuffle took place in the party.
AAP on Sunday stated that Gahlot left the party due to pressure from central agencies, but sources close to Gahlot claim that he was actually sidelined by AAP's leadership despite his efforts to maintain a low profile. The sudden move has left AAP facing questions regarding its ability to retain key leaders and deal with internal power struggles.
During the last few months, Gahlot had made it a point to attend events where AAP chief Arvind Kejriwal was present, showing a commitment to the party. However, despite his efforts, Gahlot was not given significant powers or responsibilities in the ministries he headed, and several ministers' portfolios were taken away from him.
AAP's decision to nominate "newcomer" Atishi instead of Gahlot for key positions further fueled tensions within the party, particularly after the AAP leadership decided to make Atishi the chief minister last month. The sudden change left many senior AAP leaders unhappy, including Gahlot.
Gahlot had played a quiet role compared to other AAP cabinet ministers, who often engaged in name-calling and allegations. His ability to work closely with civil servants had also been seen as an asset by party leaders.
While the exact reasons behind Gahlot's sudden departure from AAP are still unclear, sources close to him suggest that he has joined the Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP).
In a statement on Sunday, the AAP said Kailash Gahlot was leaving for the BJP, while several other senior AAP leaders have remained tight-lipped about their positions regarding Gahlot's departure.
