£3m Investment Boosts Women's Health Research in Wales

A significant investment has been made by Health and Care Research Wales, supported by the Welsh Government, to establish a specialist research centre focused on women's health in Wales. The £3m funding package is part of a larger £49 million investment announced yesterday, supporting 17 research centres across the country.

The Women's Health Centre for Excellence will play a crucial role in addressing health inequalities and shaping future services for women, as set out in the recently published Women's Health Plan for Wales. The plan aims to ensure that Welsh health services truly meet women's needs at every stage of their lives.

Minister for Mental Health and Wellbeing Sarah Murphy praised the investment, saying it will help improve our understanding of women's experiences and develop more effective treatments for them. She also expressed hope that the centre will attract top researchers in the field and prioritize Welsh women's voices in shaping future healthcare services.

The funding package complements a separate £750,000 available for dedicated women's health research projects. The Women's Health Network, part of the NHS Executive, will now work closely with Health and Care Research Wales and academic experts to develop high-quality health evidence specific to women in Wales.

National Clinical Lead for Women's Health Dr Helen Munro welcomed the investment, stating that it represents a crucial step towards an equal healthcare system for women in Wales. The team at the Women's Health Network is excited to collaborate with their Welsh Government partners and stakeholders to deliver meaningful improvements in experiences and outcomes for women across the nation.

The £49 million funding package will support 17 research centres nationwide, demonstrating a commitment to investing in cutting-edge research that addresses pressing health issues. As the Women's Health Centre for Excellence takes shape, it is poised to make a lasting impact on the healthcare landscape of Wales.
