Youngest-Ever World Chess Champion: D Gukesh Wins Thrilling Title

Singapore (Thursday): At the age of 18, Indian Grandmaster D Gukesh has shattered records and won the coveted title of Youngest Ever World Chess Champion, defeating Chinese chess superstar Ding Liren in an emotionally charged 14-match contest.

Gukesh's triumphant victory marks a historic moment not just for him but also for India, as he becomes the second Indian to claim the prestigious crown, following in the footsteps of Viswanathan Anand. The battle was intense, with Gukesh emerging victorious 7.5-6.5 against Liren.

Prime Minister Narendra Modi and other prominent leaders have congratulated Gukesh on his incredible achievement, hailing it as a "historic and exemplary" moment. PM Modi took to social media to wish Gukesh good luck, saying, "Congratulations to Gukesh D on his remarkable accomplishment. This result is a testament to his unparalleled talent, hard work, and unwavering determination."

The prize money for the 2024 World Chess Championship stands at $2.5 million (approximately ₹20.75 crore), with winners awarded $200,000 each for their victories. Gukesh earned approximately $600,000 from his three victories in Games 3, 11, and 14.

While Liren took home $400,000 from his wins in Games 1 and 2, the remaining prize money was split equably between the two competitors. With this split, Gukesh secured a winning total of approximately $11.34 crore ($1.35 million), while Liren earned around ₹9.66 crore ($1.15 million).

"We're living our dreams," exclaimed elated Gukesh after his groundbreaking achievement. He expressed gratitude to God and all the supporters who encouraged him throughout his journey, stating, "I've been dreaming about this since I was 6 or 7. Every chess player wants to live this moment."

Indian chess legend Vidit Gujrathi echoed Gukesh's sentiments, saying that this victory will draw more fans into the world of chess, creating a new wave of enthusiasts.
