India's Naval Strength Gains with Maiden Commission of Stealth Missile Frigate INS Tushil
New Delhi (December 9): The Indian Navy has welcomed a new stealth missile frigate, INS Tushil (F 70), into its fleet after it was officially commissioned at the Yantar Shipyard in Kaliningrad, Russia.
Defence Minister Rajnath Singh attended the event and hailed the ship as a symbol of India's growing maritime power and an important step in the strong partnership between India and Russia. Mr. Singh also highlighted Russia's support for India's goal of becoming self-reliant under the 'Aatmanirbhar Bharat' initiative.
The INS Tushil is a modernized warship belonging to the Krivak III class under Project 1135.6, with six similar vessels already in service with the Indian Navy. The ship is designed for advanced combat and plays a key role in strengthening India's naval capabilities.
Notably, the INS Tushil features a gas turbine engine manufactured by Zorya Nashproekt of Ukraine, despite ongoing tensions between Russia and Ukraine. This highlights the complexities of global defense collaborations.
The fifth generation Krivak-class frigates are equipped with advanced weapons and technology, making them powerful and versatile warships. Equipped with engines made by Zorya Nashproekt, these ships can protect larger vessels, attack enemy targets, and ensure coastal security.
Designed for operations in open oceans, INS Tushil is capable of operating across four key areas: air, surface (on water), underwater, and the electromagnetic spectrum (which includes radar and communication systems). It combines advanced Russian and Indian technology, making it a potent weapon in naval warfare.
The ship weighs 3,900 tonnes and has a range of advanced weapons on board, including BrahMos anti-ship cruise missiles, surface-to-air missiles, and a 100 mm main gun. It also features advanced radars, navigation systems, sonar, electronic warfare equipment, fire control systems, and decoys.
INS Tushil's maiden commission marks an important milestone in India's naval capabilities, solidifying the country's position as a major player in the Asia-Pacific region. The ship is expected to strengthen India's ability to conduct complex missions in diverse environments.
With its advanced features and Russian-Indian technology, INS Tushil is poised to play a key role in ensuring national security and defending India's interests at sea.
